Recently, I've been studying globalization and its affect on indigenous peoples and traditions. I've also been researching my Mohawk ancestry.

This is a beautiful photo taken at St. Patrick's Cathedral Door, NYC

History:

Mohawk: KANIEN'KEHAKE or "People of the Flint". The Mohawk Nation is one of five founding nations of the Iroquois Confederacy formed by neighbouring & closely related North American Native Nations: the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga & the Seneca.

According to the oral history of the Iroquois, the founding date was some time between AD 1000 & 1450, and maybe as late as 1600 according to some writers, but certainly before the arrival of the Europeans.

Later, in the early eighteenth century, a sixth nation, the Tuscarora, was admitted to their fold, although they are still known as "The Five Nations." They were also know as the "People of the Longhouse" or HAUDENOSAUNEE (ROTINONTSIONNI) from the rectangular shape of their communal houses and the layout of their territories. Thus the lands of the Confederacy are likened to a communal house, and the role of each Nation is likened to that of the family occupying the same position in a communal house.

The Mohawks guarded the territory in the East and became know as the "Eastern Doorkeepers," the Seneca were the "Western Doorkeepers." The Onondagas in the middle were the "Firekeepers" while the Cayuga and Oneida are the "Younger Brothers" & the Tuscarora the "Adopted Brothers."

The name "Mohawk" was given to them by the Algonquin Nation & was later adopted by the British, Dutch, French & the Americans due to the fact it was easier to spell & to pronounce. Their true name is KANIEN'KEHAKE or "People of the Flint." By being called the Mohawks through history, they more or less accepted that name in the same manner as they accepted being called "Indians."

Some people in Akwesasne are of Abenaki, Onondaga, Oneida, Cayuga and Huron blood but the majority are of Mohawk or Kanien'kehake descent.

Akwesasne today is a small remnant of the hunting & dwelling grounds that the Mohawk have occupied for eons. During the mild and warmer months they lived in the area along the St. Lawrence River, true name Kaniatarakeh. During the colder weather they migrated to the "Mohawk Valley" - what is now Central New York State - near present-day Fonda & Auriesville.

The Mohawks were never tent, tee pee or wigwam dwellers. They erect tidy, comfortable & permanent homes using locally available building materials, in the past in the form of long houses (averaging in size from 80 to 120 feet) covered with Elm bark & sometimes Hemlock bark, in the present in the form of European style houses. Their St. Regis village closely resembles the villages of central & eastern Europe, and especially the villages of the plain in eastern Hungary, the Ukraine and Russia.

Thousands of years ago, according to history, when Mohawk hunters traveling from the Mohawk valley to Akwesasne for the first time, they found limitless quantities of game, moose, beaver, deer, muskrat, birds and a large variety of fish. One day, as they were exploring the area, they heard a drumming sound from over the hills. They started to follow the direction of the sound & as they climbed a hill & cleared away the bush, spotted a male partridge perched on a thick tree branch, beating his wings - generating the drumming sound.

This was the first time they had witnessed the partridge's mating ceremony, & the motto, "Akwesasne, where the partridge drums its wings" is rooted in this historical description.

Akwesasne was an established settlement with a large population long before the Reverend A Gordon S.J. & his followers from Kanewake further down the Mohawk River arrived to establish a mission in 1752. The Mission & the Rectory were completed in 1789 by Rev. J.A. McDonnell & his followers. They named their creation after St. Jean Francis Regis who, never entering the country but wanting to work amongst the "Indians," made numerous & generous financial contributions to the Mission.

Due to its location, several tiers of government are involved in Akwesasne. The so-called American portion is administered by the St. Regis Tribal Council with offices off Route 37, Hogansburg, NY., while the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne with its offices in St. Regis village administers the so-called Canadian portion, including St. Regis & Kawehnoke (Cornwall) islands.

Kawehnoke, in the infamous traditions of the Berlin Wall, is divided in two with an 8 to 10 foot tall chain link fence, topped with razor wire erected by the Canadians to protect "their rights" - rights they do not own. The Mohawk Council of Chiefs do not recognize any of the artificial boundaries imposed on them and as the natural & historic government of their peoples, administers the community as a whole, in accordance with their heritage, traditions & culture.

Today, 10,000 people maintain their Haudenosaunee identity & move about freely within their territory with total condemnation & disregard towards the boundaries drawn by European immigrants. "We were always here and we will always be here."

A Year of Local Eating experiment born on the first day of spring in 2005. Eating only food grown and produced within a 100-Mile radius.

What has me interested in this book? What caught my attention? What places importance?

I'm half-vegetarian (re: I don't eat beef, does that count?). The bike's cute :) I really like the tree at the end of the road!

However, it's none of that, it's something else...

It wasn't the word diet. No way! What's that?! It wasn't 100-Mile. Are you kidding?! You'd never last on a diet. It wasn't a year. 'Cause Time is short enough. It was local eating.

YES! Local Eating! An idea that's environmentally responsible and promotes sustainability...

"The average American meal (and we assumed the average Canadian meal is similar), according to World Watch, reports that the ingredients typically travel between 2,500 and 4,000 kilometers, a 25 percent increase from 1980, and has attracted responses from as far away as Norway, France and Australia.

This average meal uses up to 17 times more petroleum products and increases carbon dioxides emissions by the same amount compared to an entirely local meal."

By the Side of a Road

Veiled in dust by the side of a road
wanders and gathers, heedfully so
a hush, and an essence linger there
quiver petals of passion, parted everywhere.

A sudden shimmer in light alone
acreage and lanes, and rock unknown
a time, then a moment slowly slip ahead
descent flutters of a kind, but weeps instead.

What odd footings this day cross?
Divine and waits, unearthed by loss
a stark, and an inkling once to adorn
entwine at the edge, a reminiscence torn.

A power known without a face
near and far, which hold will embrace?
a call, then a sorrow broke a fall in flames
breaks ground with truth, brushes wet with blame.

To where will go a path as such?
Wonders and wakens, surrenders to touch
as once, and before a searching place
finds hope with love, leaves fate with grace.

A clear sky envelops with a beauty so deep
devotion and patience find a love will creep
a rhythm, and a soul on guard unfold
in ones own grasp by the side of a road.

Veiled in dust by the side of a road... favorite line I've ever written. An image that mysteriously haunts every time I read it, as though I'm to bring her to life in a forbidden novel.

Born in Miami 1927 and raised in the Bahamas, Poitier began acting after the war, and soon made his debut in Hollywood with No Way Out. He became the first black actor to win an Academy Award for Best Actor. In 1968 he was knighted by H.M. Queen Elizabeth II and is the recipient of four honorary doctorate degrees, the last from New York University. He has starred in over forty films, directed nine, and written four. He has received three Golden Globe Awards; an American Film Institute Lifetime Achievement Award; the Kennedy Center Lifetime Achievement Award; and the Screen Actors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award, among many other awards and honors. In April 1997 Poitier was named the Ambassador to Japan from the Bahamas. Sir Poitier is currently president and CEO of Verdon Cedric Productions. He is married, has six daughters, four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

For the last ten years, Joe Hill has been writing short stories and wrote an unpublished novel under his pen name. Now he brings us a fantasy-tainted thriller that Warner Bros. has already bought the film rights to six-months before Heart Shaped Box hit the market!

Facts:

The moniker he chose did not come out of the blue. He is legally Joseph Hillstrom King, named for the labour organizer whose 1915 execution for murder in Utah inspired the song, "Joe Hill," an anthem of the labour movement. His parents, who came of age during the 1960s, "were both pretty feisty liberals and looked at Joe Hill as a heroic figure," he said.

"Heart-Shaped Box," a title drawn from a song by the rock group Nirvana, is a fast-paced tale of another man with dual identities. Judas Coyne, born Justin Cowzynski, is an over-the-hill heavy metal rocker with a strange hobby: amassing ghoulish artifacts. The choice of title was pure serendipity. Hill's initial idea, "Private Collection," went by the wayside when the 1993 Nirvana song popped up on iTunes as the author was getting ready to write the episode in which UPS delivers the haunted suit to Coyne. It was then that Hill decided to package the suit in a heart-shaped box.

As excitement percolated about "Heart-Shaped Box," so, too, did lingering questions about its author. Inklings about Hill's family background started appearing in online message boards in 2005 when his collection of short stories, "20th Century Ghosts," was published in Britain.

Still, his pen name had a good ride. The editor of "Heart-Shaped Box" was unaware of the King connection and Hill's agent remained in the dark for eight years before the author spilled the beans two years ago.

My Father's Hands

My Father, thou art here,
with my spirit of heaven.
In all my days I needed you,
you failed me not.

It is often not enough said,
of the impression you leave,
I, in my heart,
do solemnly believe.

I have grasped for the wind,
and tried to hold it palms tight,
but only a God, like you,
could part those waters with your Might.

There was a time,
I was deeply afraid,
in my own troubled waters,
I could not have made.

Openly you would listen,
Graciously you would give,
only a Son, like you,
could walk on those waters and Live.

Thought this poem also fitting with my concerns of global warming. Even now it still stops me and makes me think about this planet we abuse and the environment.

Easter Sunday Message

Like the way Thanksgiving is my favorite celebrated family holiday, so are the moments of Jesus for which he gave us all, leading up to Easter Monday - these are the 'Time' for which I am most thankful.

The Bible is poetry to me in the way Shakespeare is poetry to many. Have you ever considered the same about the Bible? It really is so beautiful. Sometimes I become so overwhelmed by how sensible and aware their minds back then when I see the meaning in the words of the Bible. It really is not hard to understand and a lot of it requires an intuition you may not even know you surely have. I am sure everyone would love it. Here's a great website and resource, Bible Gateway, where you can read and research scripture online all in the language or translation of your choice! I also love Billy Graham and his website... he reminds me so much of my Grandfather and the way he used to share the gospel.

Some of my favorite Biblical Phrases from King James' Version I've included below from the Bible given to me by my mother, which my Grandmother gave to her - and I will pass down for generations to come. It is the only thing of this earth I keep as all other material things I've ever owned have never been important to me and I always give away to someone else in need (and forgive me to say, toss!).

Better Single Than Sorry

Here's what I love and relate to about single woman and author Jen Schefft and her new book Better Single Than Sorry: A No-Regrets Guide to Loving Yourself and Never Settling...

Soon I will be reading the pages to see how happy Jen Schefft really is. Why? I am a woman content and happy in being single and in who I am.

However, within the text of Harper Collin's book description it starts like this:

"Let's be honest. No woman really wants to be alone for the rest of her life."

Already I've noticed that doesn't stack up with her claim of being content and happy in who she is and life and my "reason" for buying the book...

How can a woman say she's happy and content if she can also say she doesn't want to be alone the rest of her life?
Quite simply: She can't. Period.

So far I am the only girl from my childhood and woman I know that doesn't desire the "fairy tale" story, no dreams to get married, none of that. I know people have a difficult time understanding it, but those who know me know I'm happy and confident with that and always have been.

I've never believed in marriage. Even when I was a little girl. I have bigger things I want to accomplish in my life. It's that simple. For me. How can marriage possibly be real or genuine if it's not an eternal commitment? I'm real. Marriage isn't. Why waste my time? And that's how I honestly see it.

However, I have no doubt Jen Schefft is being true to herself when she says she's not willing to settle--obviously--she walked away from one engagement and turned down two proposals. Congratulations Jen! I sincerely mean that.

In looking back, a young woman discovers her ‘years to come’ and sees her future.

It begins with the sadness of her Grandfather’s passing, takes her back to the memories they shared, and then leads her to rediscover her strengths and instincts as a child when she recalls a single verse [see Luke 2:49]

A Personal Short Story and Memoir:

I Want To Give ~ In Loving Memory & A Single Verse

Her Grandfather passed away last year. She remembers him as always working and smiling, and he loved to laugh out loud. He cared about people and always had a lot to share with them.

On her last visit…

His face and spirit still like a shining star. It always started out she felt inspired; they ate together, caught up on the family-tree, and looked at old photographs.

Grandpa loved to share the gospel. He had a way with speaking out. He was the kind of man to welcome a child on his knee and tell Bible stories. As she got older, she read the Bible and he listened. In all those years, and every time she saw him, he would say, “Jesus loves you.”

They had fun playing board games Backgammon and Scrabble, and when they competed in Croquet they could always count on each other to say, “Let’s go again!” If she were to add the hours they played their favorite card game? It would be a better surprise to count the number of times they charged at the challenge to see who was the fastest; and jumped across the table to reach the last pile, and exclaimed as loud as they could “Dutch Blitz!”

She listened when he talked about his life and work. They were ‘cut from the same cloth’ in the way they shared an understanding for respect, especially for listening and learning.

It was during their last visit, she sensed there was more to their connection…

And, so began the subtle power of God’s enduring grace.

One day in her reminiscence…

Her mother told her of the day she was born: said she was “unusual” in the way that she smiled a lot and was content; Grandpa would always say she had a “beautiful spirit.”

She saw her Grandfather much in the same way, and perhaps inevitable…

Soon, every time she ran to the corner store she was greeted with “Smiley!” by the storekeeper. But the storekeeper was not the only one inspired. She remembers it struck her somehow, as if to say she was so grown up and her smile would surely lead to her destiny.

At five years old, she arrived home from summer Bible Camp - a children’s camp founded by her Grandfather, and ran up to her mother in the kitchen with a very big smile and cried out in glee “Guess what, I asked Jesus into my heart!” She somehow knew that in her heart and in her life Jesus would always be.

She felt him in the way she felt her spirit now.

Now she knew God's love.

She then came to learn more of what Grandpa was all about…

Times would come when she would help with the Newsletter - a native gospel newsletter also founded by her Grandfather, and sort stacks of ‘little green paper’ on many tables where together they put them in numerical order and then folded them in half like a book, and she was already excited to know the inspiration books could bring…

Holding her breath, she would always go down the dark, cold basement steps to Grandpa’s library study, at the same time anticipate what she would find next down there - always a new world to explore.

On this day, she found a heavy volume of big, blue children’s books that talked about Jesus and his many journeys. A story in particular, when Jesus was just a boy and went to the Lord’s Temple where he had to be about his Father’s house - and listened and talked with the many scholars there.

It would stay with her ‘for years to come’.

Was God speaking to her there?

With an innate knowledge and respect for leadership and principles she works to share that with people too, and lives to influence people to listen within and to welcome their own spirit so they can see others need theirs too; and shares compassion.

Could it also be, that reading about Jesus and his journeys, and learning from her Grandfather’s influence, is why no matter where she is, even in a cold and dark basement, it always feels like home?

God is serenity. She remembers that summer on the beach and sitting on a rock, and it occurs to her now: she does not remember her thoughts before that moment or who she even was, but she remembers how she felt during that prayer, and ever since then, and that is to always consider God before everything she does and to look after her spirit - she never feels alone - she has never felt lonely.

She knows God is everywhere. He speaks to us all the time. She wants to share that, for she sees there are many people who feel alone or get lonely.

The rock is symbolic; of, no matter the weight we carry, God will always hear us and respond with a smile…

And we will surely feel it.

Now at a time in her life when she is making another life-changing decision, she sits on the rock she founded…

She goes back to her last visit with her Grandfather, and speaks with him once more; at the same time she feels a deep aspiration to change the direction of her work…

Indeed, God has spoken. It was as she sensed before.

Then she hears Grandpa say “Hello Smiley! Bring my work up from the basement and let’s take it to the store!”

Her Grandfather had a sense of humor and he always made her laugh! He also loved candy! But she was not scared to go down the cold, dark basement steps, and do you know why?

Because at the end there would always be a part of him that she would find…

For she had to be about her Grandpa’s house.

He lived to share God’s grace…

Now she works to serve God.

To bring the mysterious, enlightening and wondrous works of God upon her as a small child, and the dedicated ‘life and work’ of her Grandfather - to share their grace and love through her passion for stories and writing that will inspire ‘for years to come’.

To let others know God is speaking to us all the time.

The final step she takes...

She will look back on her ‘years to come’... and happy to see ‘life and work’ are one and the same.

And she knows it is the way it is to always have been - with God.

after watching the movie Pirates of the Caribbean and thinking about my 'lack' of cooking that weekend :)

My Discovery of an Artist

A God. A Goddess. Religion. Nature. Science. Laws. Man.

I caught the end of a documentary on the life of Leonardo da Vinci…

The television was flashing in the corner in the dim of my livingroom while I was walking by…
I heard “secret society.”

A couple of months later, I walked by a bookstore and locked eyes with the Mona Lisa staring from the front display case. Though I couldn’t see her smile, just the look in her eyes seemed to hear her whisper to me...

“The Da Vinci Code” she said.

I immediately purchased the book as a gift. I knew the person. I knew right away it was perfect.

However, something wasn’t so perfect for me. Something didn’t feel right. I was now empty handed with nothing more to learn...

I couldn’t let her go. For whatever reason I couldn’t. I continued to think of her mystery.

A year later, I went back to the same bookstore. It was obvious now I would never let her go. The eyes are the windows to the soul they say - and she had plenty.

There she was once again, and though just the cover of a book, her eyes for sure looked at me this time as though in a moment of worship.

Was there something I should have said?

And so now, I too, must share her story - that is what she said.

“In the beginning…” a familiar verse.

It speaks of when the world started. Like the rest of the world - this is what I know. This is where it began.
A zippered black-covered Bible sits open before me - was handed down. My Grandmother. My mother. Now me.

Seems as though this is what I was born to know. A right come with me.

While I knew little about Leonardo da Vinci when I started reading The Da Vinci Code, I learned there was much to discover about the symbols in his art, and while I know nothing about art at all, by the end of the book I came to the conclusion that whatever it was that was going on with Leonardo da Vinci…

The Last Supper

It was most certainly symbolic of a Time. I don’t see his art as fleeting moments of himself but rather as solid events in history.

But is it a right or wrongs come by him?

And that’s where his brilliance is so baffling to me. And as if waiting for a response, I stare hard determined to know.

Is that what Leonardo da Vinci had in mind? Am I to ever know?

Like the Bible; Mona Lisa says for sure she knows a truth while she hides the secrets of her Master.

The Vitruvian Man

In my discovery of an artist: challenged everyone while he challenged himself; motivated, perhaps by secrets that haunt others more than they seemed to have haunted him; a recluse more interested in nature; a man whose quest was to find a formula for ever-lasting life.

In my discovery of art: art and laws intertwine naturally on their own, perhaps comes from the personal challenges of an artist (morals and values and principles) that question the laws of man; it is not the answers that inspire the artist and rather it’s the questions that lead to inspire the observer.

In my discovery of the book: explores symbols and why the “sacred feminine” became lost; back then it was a time of gods and goddesses, now strictly a time of gods; symbolism was a sign of worship; religion vs. science; even today, we still seek spiritual fulfillment.

I would like to mention the effect the author and this book had...

His knowledge, dedication, time, research, organization, interest and efforts have made me a NEW FAN!

I am more than pleased to have been introduced to The World of Art so new to me by a man…

All the while taking me further every step of the way without getting me lost :)

At the same time, he has greatly captured my curiosity about the “sacred feminine” and what it could mean for the world.

He has reminded me of more than one religion, and even took me back to where it all began to “the devine order of Nature” and encouraged by celebrating how special and unique this world was, is and becomes.

He has touched on my awareness of privacy and rights while led to doors that could possibly open.

He has written powerful messages that share in my hopes and my love for the people of this world.

And last, but not least, all the while he has allowed me to smile and share in my faith :)

Inspired by the sounds of Cafe del Mar

Writing for another pleasure...

This story below is inspired by the sounds and music of Cafe del Mar.

Have you heard of it?

There is no doubt it knows me... it certainly found me. I wrote the story while listening to their CDs for the very first time. I always thought this would be grand material for stage theatre.

If you'd like to know more, you can find their music at www.cafedelmarmusic.com.

The idea is to play the Volume and Track numbers for each Act and read along.

You will need Volumen Siez - Tracks #4 and #12

I wrote a total of six Acts - here there are two. I've not included the final Act--simply to keep it a mystery. I've always loved mysteries :)

BEFORE YOU BEGIN:

You MUST put your headphones on if you're playing the songs and have the music LOUD! It MUST be headphones because just to turn your speakers up on your computer is nothing close to intense. These songs are written with an intensity in mind that is shared and captured when you are completely within the world it comes from. You can NOT be completely lost in this particular world if you are not wearing your headphones. SO GET THEM! Find your headphones and plug in--you DON'T want to miss this!
You will need about 20 to 30-minutes here. I suggest you get started with a glass of wine or your favorite liquor or coffee :) You're going to need it.
Also know, this is written for both men and women--so neither is going to get bored and you may want to call out to your partner to join you here. Yes, really. Really. My last reader said it was "mind blowing!"
Try to follow along... listen to the music and read this a few times and you'll catch on.

Note: I had A LOT of fun writing the story for Track #12! It's James Bond 007 style :) The story was so much fun to write that I'm thinking of making it longer, it's still way too short for me.

Piece of 'Time'

A story I wrote 'Time' inspired by the music and sounds of Cafe del Mar.
The piece above is part of that story; originally a poem I wrote during a writing class. It was later I included it in 'Time'. The link above will take you to the story. There are a total of six Acts - I posted two of them.

We all exchange words.
Nothing is more powerful than words and is in the attitudes in which we share them...

Communication:
a) Dejamoo - the feeling you've heard this bull before.
b) "You demand mental compatibility in order to be turned on, and you're not likely to let anyone dance with your body if they can't also dance with your mind."

Confidence:
It takes confidence to say what's on your mind and let's you share with others. When I can scream Dude Looks Like A Lady at the top of my lungs - well what is more powerful than that!

Sense:

Born Talent:
There are secrets in the hands of an ancient storyteller that give life to the voice of a sleeping soul. No idea where that just came from! Give me a pen or keyboard and the words are there that I can see them before I have even had a chance to think about them. I have not yet researched this to understand how or why that is - but perhaps it must be talent?!

Awareness:
Though we are born of a science we do not understand - we certainly connect with life and loss. Awareness then reaches beyond any border imaginable.

Inspiration:
As a writer, singer, songwriter, or musician, to name a few, you have the opportunity to draw out in people what's more than likely there, but what no one has given attention to - and that's pretty powerful, don't you agree?!

Leadership & Responsibility:
Then there's the responsibility in words: requires a leader with enough courage to say or write them; to represent a strength in who they are; to stand on solid ground and stay true in who they are. You have an opportunity to lead a country or reach the entire world...

And there's something really fascinating about that.
